There might be a movie about Steve McQueen. No, not this Steve McQueen. This one. Motorcycle-riding, car-driving, baseball-tossing, turtleneck-wearing Steve McQueen. A biopic of Hollywood’s epitome of 1960s cool is in the works. Deadline is reporting that the film will be based on a biography written by Marshall Terrill, but will also use a journal that McQueen had when he died in Mexico in 1980, and which contains a secret that will change how the actor is considered. “Something happened in McQueen’s life that has been kept secret for a long time,” said producer Graham Kaye. “We think we have a very interesting way into this story.” What is the secret? Scandal from a movie set? Guilt over slapping around wife Ali MacGraw? Lifelong envy of Paul Newman? Instructions how to supercharge a motorbike’s engine?

And who will play him? What Hollywood actor is cool enough to fill the shoes of the Cooler King? No doubt all the usual good-looking blond, blue-eyed thespians are being considered for the part (Gosling, Hemsworth, Pine, and so on). Personally, I think there’s perhaps only one actor who has the look, the gravitas and the sense of humor to pull it off: Paul Bettany.
