On Empire, the Fox hit drama about the music industry, Jamal (Jussie Smollett) cozies up to a famous artist named Delphine (Estelle). When Jamal sees her in the studio he bows to her and tells her what an honor it is to meet her. The feeling is mutual. She convinces Jamal to sing with her. Together they sing “Conqueror.”
It’s no wonder Delphine sounds pretty good doing the song. “Conqueror” is from Estelle’s fourth album True Romance. Estelle (born Estelle Fanta Swaray) is the 35-year-old British singer-songwriter, rapper and Grammy Award winner from West London. She’s known for her high-profile collaborations with Kanye West (“American Boy”), David Guetta (“One Love”), John Legend, and Chris Brown, among others. Ironically, True Romance doesn’t feature any duets. The song “Conqueror” is being heralded as a triumphant female anthem with the echoing line, “I’d rather stand tall then live on my knees.”
