Before the MLB season begins, some of the New York Yankees decided to practice their acting skills. They recreated the classic scene from the movie The Sandlot. Here’s the gist: a kid uses a baseball that was signed by Babe Ruth. But the kid doesn’t know who Babe Ruth is. “Who is she?!” the kid has the nerve to ask.
It’s cute. But jaded New Yorkers might wonder why now? Is the video a cute attempt to distract fans of the fact that Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez, who admitted to using steroids, still may play first base this season? The Yankees don’t usually have to resort to cute. They usually go with power and might–shock and awe–but it’s different in the Bronx these days. Jeter is gone and the playoffs aren’t such a sure thing anymore. Who is Babe Ruth may be another way of asking what Paul Simon wanted to know: Where have you gone, Joe DiMaggio? And why did you leave us with A-Rod?
