The Hollywood movies Divergent and Insurgent are based on the dystopian young-adult books by Veronica Roth. In the series, people need to choose one characteristic and live it for the rest of their lives. The five choices are: brave, humble, brainy, friendly, and truthful. In Insurgent, there are a few who can’t be defined by one and that includes the hero, Tris. The fact that she can’t be pigeonholed makes her a threat to society at large.
There are some parallels between Insurgent and the classic fairy tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Both female protagonists wreaks havoc among a community (Snow White sneaks into home of dwarfs). Both get duped into consuming poison. (Snow White takes a bite of that poison apple; the Candor people give Tris a kind of truth serum). Both women fall into deep sleeps (they’re called dream sequences in Hollywood). They both have a thing for birds. There’s no glass coffin in Insurgent — maybe one would have helped. It’s not receiving great reviews.
