Scotty Canna Handle The Script, Cap’n! Or Maybe He Can
Presumably Scotty has enough dilithium crystals to ensure that the Enterprise can reach warp speed, because Simon Pegg is taking over writing duties on the next Star Trek film. After JJ Abrams’ departure to helm the Star Wars film, Paramount has decided to ask Pegg to have a go at the script. Pegg has a long history of writing spacey/science-fiction stuff, but will he ratchet up the jokes at the expense of story?
Tor.com approves of the decision: “This is the kind of news that makes perfect sense: Star Trek 3 will be well served to pull from its own ranks for a fresh take on the script. (Pegg also follows the tradition of Trek actors helming feature films, with Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner, and Jonathan Frakes directing various movies.) And of course, Pegg co-wrote the entire Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World’s End) with Edgar Wright, as well as the TV series Spaced.” I am not so convinced, however, as I thought The World’s End was just not that funny, and nowhere near as good as it thought it was. Besides, there’s always a challenge with Star Trek films ensuring that all the franchise’s characters get enough screen-time and are given interesting things to do. Personally, I want to see less Scotty, more Chekov (Anton Yelchin).
