Tobey Maguire (Spiderman) was originally cast in the lead role of the science fiction film, Z for Zachariah. But Chris Pine (Captain Kirk in Star Trek) snatched it away. In Z for Zachariah, Pine plays Caleb, one of the few survivors of a World War III disaster that wipes out most of civilization. Caleb finds himself in “an emotionally charged love triangle” with actors Margot Robbie and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
Z for Zachariah is based on the novel of the same title by Robert C. O’Brien, which takes place in the Midwest but the film was shot entirely in New Zealand’s Banks Peninsula. While filming there, in March 2014, Pine was arrested after failing a roadside breath alcohol test. He said he’d drunk four vodkas at a local bar. He couldn’t drive for six months and was ordered to pay NZ$93 in reparation.
