As a football fan, much of my weekend is spent in front of the TV watching as many college and pro football games as possible. I start with College Gameday and end with Sunday Night Football. I’m happy when it rains or snows so I won’t feel guilty about the yard work I should be doing. Despite my devotion to the sport, I’ll never understand Cover 2, Zone Blitz, or the difference between a Jet Sweep and a Bubble Screen. It’s too technical for me.
There is one thing that I do understand, and I can’t believe that so many college and pro coaches don’t: time management. Every weekend is full of wasted timeouts in the first and third quarter, and usually the team with the ball at the end of the game has a chance to score only to be at the mercy of the clock. Smart coaches value those timeouts like the gold that they are and have them at the end when the game is on the line. According to Pivit, a team’s chances to win can be as much as 20% greater if they have all three of their timeouts left in a tie game and less than 2 minutes on the clock. That is a huge difference, and over the course of the season can be the difference between making the playoffs and being on the couch watching. At least if you’re watching, you can play Pivit and learn something…
