In Season 6 of the CBS hit series The Mentalist, former con man turned investigator Patrick Jane hunted down and killed serial killer Red John (who had murdered his wife and child). Since the killing of Red John–and the split of Jane and Lisbon’s FBI team that followed–the show just hasn’t been the same. So it’s no great surprise that The Mentalist‘s 7th season, currently filming, will be its last. The new season won’t premiere in September either, in its usual slot after The Good Wife. Mentalist fans will have to wait until January 2015.
The final episode of Season 6 ended with Jane and Lisbon kissing. But will a new cast member rock the FBI boat? Make It or Break It star Josie Loren plays a rookie agent who’s been added to Jane and Lisbon’s team. Insiders say the rookie “knows nothing of his [Jane’s] methods or past, and may seem initially unimpressed by his unorthodox ways.” But as any Mentalist fan knows, everyone (especially the ladies) quickly becomes impressed by Jane. If you’re looking for a little Mentalist level magic after the show ends, the show’s creator and writer Bruno Heller is whipping up another TV project, Gotham, on FOX.
Correction: an earlier version of this article said that Bruno Heller had already left the show. That was incorrect. It also claimed Red John was killed in season 5, when the writers actually made us wait much longer: season six saw his demise.
