The 14th seeded Marin Cilic of Croatia who’s playing Roger Federer in the semifinals at the 2014 US Open wasn’t allowed to play in the 2013 US Open. He was forced to sit it out due to a four-month doping suspension. The International Tennis Federation sought a two-year ban but the court of Arbitration for Sport reduced the suspension to four months. The Court also restored ranking points and prize money that had been taken from the Croatian. Cilic tested positive for a stimulant after a match in Germany in 2013. He said he “ingested the substance unintentionally via a glucose tablet bought at a pharmacy.”
If Cilic pulls off a victory over Federer today he will face Kei Nishikori in the finals. (Nishikori ousted Novak Djokovic in the other semifinal.) Nishikori beat Cilic in Brisbane in January. (Australia’s favorite hero on the court, Lleyton Hewitt, beat Federer 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to claim the title.)
