The Michigan Wolverines (#32) play Notre Dame’s Fighting Irish (#16) tonight at South Bend. After last season’s loss to Michigan (41-30), the Michigan band let the Irish know just what it thought of Notre Dame’s decision not to schedule any more non-conference match-ups with Michigan beyond 2014. Michigan Stadium serenaded Notre Dame with the “chicken dance” song as they left the field.
According to DetriotJockCity, the Fighting Irish aren’t cowardly but strategic. Instead of playing Michigan (no longer considered an elite program?), Notre Dame will play Ohio State (#11) in a future non-conference series instead. Notre Dame has a contract with NBC to fulfill–and it needs to schedule for broadest fan interest. Michigan fans will look to lose the chicken dance tonight and adopt a motivating song like Stones’ “Start Me Up” or Asia’s “Eye of the Tiger.” A win against the Irish–just to see them off, you know–will put the Wolverines back in the conversation.
