Well built, 6’3″ Australian actor Chris Hemsworth (Thor, The Avengers) plays an MIT-educated hacker in Michael Mann’s upcoming cyber thriller Blackhat. In the beginning of the film we find the “genius coder” is serving a 15 year sentence in jail. But he gets his sentence commuted for agreeing to help the government track down a politically motivated international hacker who is causing serious damage to American financial institutions and, more recently, a Chinese nuclear reactor.
Mann is the director of Heat, Collateral and The Insider – so he knows how to set up a tense thriller (lots of guns, explosions, car chases, and a pretty girl). He also wrote the script, which isn’t as intriguing as the cinematography. Viola Davis (The Help, How To Get Away With Murder) plays a government official who delivers this unfortunate line to the Hemsworth character: “If you get discovered, you’re dead meat.” Blackhat will be released January 16, 2015.
