If a definition of Art is to look at the past and fashion it anew, then retouching old photos and repurposing them for the 21st century surely qualifies. Of course, the argument could be made that the artist isn’t doing anything new, and that it’s the Photoshop equivalent of painting by numbers. However, artist Jane Long has taken old plate-glass photos and used them to create weird, magical, and yes, artistic images.
The original black and white photographs were taken in the early years of the 20th century by Romanian photographer Costica Acsinte. Long uses the portraits of children, wedding couples, musicians and Ray Romano’s long-lost ancestor to create whimsical, magical photos.
