The American rock band The Smithereens is touring this summer and will be live streaming on Yahoo August 29 at 8:30 pm. Over their 30-year-career, The Smithereens have produced 13 albums–the last was 2011 (in 2011) which opened with the popular single Sorry. The Smithereens’ biggest hit was A Girl Like You, which hit No. 38 on the Billboard pop charts in 1990. A Girl Like You was originally written for Cameron Crowe’s film Say Anything… but Crowe pulled it because the lyrics mirrored the plot too closely.
Although it’s been a while, and the members of the band look different on stage these days, their fans are some of the most loyal in the music industry. Kath Galasso wrote in a review of the Smithereens’ recent show at B.B. King’s New York City: “…when the music started, again, they did it old school. They played with heart, they played with soul, they played for the crowd who came to see them.”
