Actor Clive Owen (Children of Men, Closer, Croupier) went on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon show to promote his bloody new TV drama on Cinemax, The Knick. (It premieres this Friday at 10pm EST). Owen told Fallon that he plays Dr. John Thackery, a genius doctor who likes to experiment with patients (and pig cadavers!) at New York’s fictional Knickerbocker Hospital, circa 1900. At night, the doctor smokes opium and injects cocaine between his toes. This is the fascinating storyline that got Steven Soderbergh to direct all ten shows.
James Poniewozik at Time got to watch seven episodes of The Knick. He said he squirmed at first but then the show grew on him and he found himself bingeing. “For us, this is the past, yes, but for Thackery and his fellow Knickerbockers it is the (literally) bleeding edge of another era, and Soderbergh gives it a dreamlike, jittery immediacy.”
