LeBron James Is One of Rich Paul’s Very Few Clients
Rich Paul cut his agent teeth at CAA–you don’t get much bigger–before starting his own shop, Klutch Sports. For an agent who isn’t a lawyer, who has no college education and only a handful of clients, Rich Paul might seem overly bold jumping off the CAA luxury cruise ship to paddle his own boat. But guess what? He’s got a childhood friend (with really strong arms) rowing with him: yes, Rich Paul’s number one client is LeBron James, sometimes known as King. (It’s the relationship with James that got Paul into CAA and also helped him bust out.) Right now James, coming off his fourth straight trip to the NBA Finals, is the most coveted free agent in all the land. Of course agency is the only thing free about him: the staggering amount of lucre that Mr. Paul is about to arrange for James to be paid is the opposite of free–no matter where he ends up playing next year.
Rich Paul may be a stranger to the Socratic method as practiced in law school classrooms, but he has no lack of education. Indeed like Socrates he has both answers and humility. Rich Paul knows basketball and relationships–which is what business is all about at the proverbial end of the day. Besides, he’s got veteran agent Mark Termini on board at Klutch, to cross the occasional reluctant t, dot an i. Rich Paul works the inside game, keeps his operation close to home (it’s in Cleveland, where he grew up) and his cards close to the vest. If you want to know more about Klutch you can go to KlutchGroup.com, but good luck getting in. It’s all real low profile, just the way Rich Paul likes it.
