Plus-size clothing is a $17.5 billion industry. According to market research company NPD Group, last year sales increased 23% for the 18-to 24-year old age group who wears size 18 and up. And they like to shop on the web. It’s the fastest-growing segment of online retailer ModCloth.
Lane Bryant, the trailblazer of the plus-size market, is now working with celebrity designers like Isabel Toldeo and French designer Sophie Theallet (First Lady Michelle Obama has worn dresses designed by both) to create fashionable red carpet worthy dresses in plus-sizes. And after actress Melissa McCarthy couldn’t find anyone to make a dress for her for the Academy Awards, she’s partnered with couture dress maker Daniella Pearl to create a line called Pearl.
