The Portland (OR) City Council voted 5-0 yesterday to expand its ban on plastic bags to include pretty much anyone who sells anything–big box retailers, food cart guys, jewelry stores (can I put that diamond in a baggie for you, sir?), you name it. Even weed dealers–oh wait, no.
The only surprising thing is that Los Angeles, of all places, beat the Portlanders to it, voting to ban plastic bags in supermarkets way back in May. Did you know, by the way, that there are only 15 members of the LA City Council? And only one is a woman? For a city of almost four million people? Anyway the only Council Member in LA who voted nay on the bag ban was Bernard Parks, former Chief of Police. Something about Salmonella…
