Singer/songwriter H.E.R. is the 24-year-old California native who won the 2021 Oscar Award for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) for “Fight for You” which was featured in the film Judas and the Black Messiah. See official music video below.
H.E.R. turned heads when photographed in the stunning hot pink corset dress above. The photos accompanied an interview with New York magazine’s Vulture. The interviewer says H.E.R. is “still a mystery to the masses.” But maybe not for long.
“Get to see more of H.E.R.: she’s making her big screen debut in the upcoming musical movie The Color Purple, based on the 1982 Alice Walker novel, which won the 1983 Pulitzer Price for Fiction. Hollywood filmmaker Steve Spielberg made the original movie in 1985, starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey. It was Oprah’s acting debut, too. Watch her memorable “Fight my whole life” scene below.
Thirty-six years later and Spielberg, Winfrey, and Walker, (and Quincy Jones, among others) are co-producing a 21st century musical version of The Color Purple starring H.E.R. as Squeak (who was portrayed in the original movie by Rae Dawn Chong). Broadway star Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Six Degrees of Separation) is playing Harpo (who was played by Willard E. Pugh.) The film is scheduled for a December 21, 2023 release.
Interesting fact: it was Quincy Jones who saw Oprah on AM Chicago and encouraged her to audition for the movie. As Oprah says, “The rest is movie history!” Oprah launched her TV talk show in 1986.
