It’s Jimmy, not James Butler, for those of you who didn’t know. And don’t worry if you didn’t know — you’re not alone. Count 76ers head coach Brett Brown among those who were unaware that the dynamic 76ers superstar Jimmy Butler was not born James Butler. Nope, he’s Jimmy. That’s always been his name.
Brown was trying to compliment the mature performance of Butler in Game 2 against the Toronto Raptors. Brown said after Butler notched 30 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and a block that who the fans saw out there on the court was “James Butler.” Brown continued: “That was the adult in the gym. He was just a tremendous sort of rock.”
Problem is that though most people called Jimmy have that nickname derived from the given name James, that isn’t the case with Butler. He’s Jimmy. “My name isn’t James, it literally is Jimmy,” Butler said. Got it? The Raptors do.
