In the Dateline episode “The Figure in the Garage,” Dennis Murphy investigates the murder of 54-year-old former firefighter Don Fluitt in Albuquerque, New Mexico. On December 29, 2016, Fluitt’s bludgeoned body was found in his garage. His throat was slit. A neighbor’s security camera captured a man going in and out of Fluitt’s garage on the night of his murder. It was Terry Lee White, the husband of Fluitt’s ex-wife Christine White. Fluitt and White were in a custody battle over their 11-year-old daughter Siena. Fluitt and his ex-wife had a court hearing scheduled in January to discuss changes in child support payments. They divorced in 2009.

In June 2017, after Terry Lee White allegedly told an inmate that his wife encouraged him to kill Fluitt, Christine White was charged with conspiracy to commit murder but the charges against her were dropped in April 2018. In June 2018, Terry Lee White was found guilty of murder, aggravated burglary and tampering with evidence. Terry White’s DNA was found under Fluitt’s fingernails. Dateline interviewed Don Fluitt’s brother Dennis Fluitt who wrote just two days before the episode airs on July 30: “It will be difficult to watch and what Terry & Christine did to Don still gives me chills! I won’t lie, I still haven’t decided if I even want to watch it after having to live it!!” Dateline airs Mondays at 10pm on NBC.
