As part of its “zero tolerance” policy, the Trump administration enforced an immigration policy that separated children from their parents who were detained at the U.S.-Mexican border. The parents were sent to federal jails while their children were placed under the supervision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. After public outcry and political pressure, on June 20 President Trump signed an executive order to reverse the policy while still maintaining “zero tolerance” border control by detaining entire families together. On June 24, Dateline is broadcasting a special one-hour report along the U.S.-Mexico border. There, NBC News correspondent Jacob Soboroff says the separation of families is a “man-made disaster.”
Jacob Soboroff, 35, made his TV debut on MSNBC in September 2015. He specializes in reporting on border issues. Soboroff, son of the President of the Board of Police Commissioners, Steve Soboroff, was one of ten journalists invited to tour Casa Padre, a former Walmart store in Texas which is housing about 1500 undocumented boys ages 10 to 17. Prior to joining the NBC network, Soboroff was host of YouTube Nation, co-host of TakePart Live on Pivot TV, and a founding host and producer of HuffPost Live. He earned his B.A. in politics and M.A. in political theory and philosophy from New York University. While in college, he worked as an aide to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Dateline airs on Sundays at 7pm on NBC.
Soboroff is also a husband a father. See cute family photo below.
