The live televised production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars John Legend as Jesus Christ during his last three days on earth. Sara Bareilles plays Mary Magdalene. And Ben Daniels plays Pontius Pilate, the “Prefect of Judea” who was reluctant to order the execution Jesus but eventually gave in. Pontius Pilate has three songs in the rock opera: “Pilate’s Dream”, “Pilate and Christ,” and “Trial Before Pilate.”
Americans will recognize British actor Ben Daniels from his roles on The Exorcist (Father Marcus Keane), Flesh and Bone (Paul Grayson), House of Cards (Adam Galloway), and in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (General Merrick), among others. Fun fact: Daniels made his Broadway debut in 2008 in a revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses, for which he was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play. Jesus Christ Superstar Live Concert airs Easter Day, April 1 at 8pm on NBC.
