In the Grey’s Anatomy episode “Caught Somewhere in Time,” while Bailey (Chandra Wilson) and Jo (Camilla Luddington) treat a trauma patient who used to be an astronaut, Jackson (Jesse Williams) gets ready to perform a groundbreaking vaginoplasty surgery with Catherine (Debbie Allen) and Richard (James Pickens Jr.) on transgender patient Michelle Velez.
Michelle Velez is portrayed by Candis Cayne who was born Brendan McDaniel, one of two male fraternal twins in 1971. She is known for her roles on The Magicians (Fairy Queen, see photo below), Transparent (Jolene), Elementary (Ms. Hudson), and Dirty Sexy Money (Carmelita Rainer, primetime’s first dramatic transgender character!), among others. Cayne has also appeared as herself on RuPaul’s Drag Race and Caitlyn Jenner’s reality show I Am Cait. Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8pm on ABC.
