Jamie Foxx stumbled hard in his quest to be “white famous” and the results are a huge opportunity for SNL alum Jay Pharoah, whose talent seems limitless (like Foxx’s!). Foxx once told this moving story about how he was “blowing it” when Oprah called him and told him “Jamie Foxx you’re blowing it” and come with me and I’ll show you how to be. Oprah introduced Foxx to the great Sidney Poitier who gave Foxx a newfound sense of responsibility in about a minute.
Now Pharoah plays a Foxx-like character (Floyd Mooney) on Showtime’s hilarious White Famous. Mooney is navigating Hollywood as a comedian who’s trying to blow up (in the good sense) without blowing up (in the tragic sense) — just like Foxx once did. (Foxx executive produces the show.) Pharoah is great in the role. [White Famous is on Showtime — streaming on Amazon, Hulu and Sling TV.] Pharoah’s face alone should win an Emmy for certain scenes — check out this face action below from Pharoah. But when he’s really great is playing off his fellow actors, especially Jacob Ming-Trent who plays Ron Balls. When the world gets crazy and you’re trying to break through you need real friends. “Balls has always got my back,” Pharoah tweets about the hilarious scene below.
