On The Bachelor, Nick Viall and the nine bachelorettes travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands. One evening, Nick and Kristina Schulman get some alone time. That’s when Kristina opens up about her childhood in Russia. She tells a heartbreaking story about remembering the kitchen cupboards being empty. And one day, her mother telling her not to eating anything. She said it would take all day, but that she would return with food. When her mother returned, she asked Kristina (who was 5 or 6 at the time) if she had eaten anything. Kristina admitted that she did — she ate lipstick.

Kristina was later adopted by an American couple. She says out of everyone in the world, she admires them the most for having the “courage to open your heart and home to four orphans and give them a life otherwise unobtainable.” Kristina also said that if she could be anyone for one day, she would choose her biological mother: “I’d like to know what she was going through when I was young and if choosing alcohol over kids was worth it.” The Bachelor airs Mondays at 8pm on ABC.
