The Dateline NBC episode “The Man Who Knew Too Much” is about the reaction to a previous Dateline episode “The Girl with the Blue Mustang.” The Girl with the Blue Mustang was 18-year-old college student Michelle O’Keefe who was murdered in 2000. An Iraq war veteran named Raymond Lee Jennings, who was working as a security guard at the parking lot where O’Keefe’s body was found, was found guilty of her murder and sentenced to life in prison. But after watching “The Girl with the Blue Mustang” episode, a young man named Clinton Ehrlich had more questions. He enlisted his father, attorney Jeffrey Ehrlich, to help reopen the case. There was no physical evidence tying Jennings to the murder and no weapon was found. Jennings was convicted during a third trial (the first two were deadlocked).
In June 2016, thanks to the efforts of the Ehrlichs, Jennings was released from prison after serving 11 years. He is required to wear electronic monitoring for his case has not been dismissed. However, Michelle’s father Michael O’Keefe insists that Jennings killed his daughter. He said, “Based on what I know, Mr. Jennings is still guilty until proven otherwise.” Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 9pm on NBC.
