Dateline NBC is devoting three episodes to Sean McGavic, a 37-year-old man who is looking for his birth parents. McGavic was always told that he was adopted. When he was one month old in 1978, he was adopted by Martha and Claude McGavic, a local Florida politician. Martha kept a baby book which strangely included 8 pages of newspaper clippings about the Jim Jones mass murder suicide in Guyana (the same month Sean was born).
[Books and films about Jim Jones and his following include Raven: The Untold Story of the Rev. Jim Jones and His People]
When Sean McGavic was a teenager, his adoptive parents divorced. His mother Martha remarried twice after McGavic. Her second husband was Air Force, Vietnam War veteran Robert McClancy, who was murdered in his home in May 2006. Shockingly, Martha and her then boyfriend Chuck Kaczmarczyk were later found guilty of murdering McClancy. (A staged suicide using an overdose of McClancy’s PTSD medication.) Martha and Chuck married after McClancy’s death. Their motive was to receive McClancy’s veteran’s military benefits. In 2012, Chuck Kaczmarczyk confessed to murdering McClancy and the couple divorced shortly after. At Martha McClancy’s trial (she dropped the Kaczmarczyk name), her adopted son Sean McGavic testified against her and asked for the maximum sentence. In June 2016, Martha was sentenced to 50 years in prison. Dateline airs Fridays at 9pm on NBC.
