Denver Bronco Demaryius Thomas tweeted a very public thanks to President Obama. Among the 214 prison sentences Obama commuted this week was that of a woman serving a life sentence for cocaine trafficking. That woman, Minnie Pearl Thomas, is Demaryius Thomas’ grandmother. Obama freed Demaryius’s mother last year — his mother and grandmother were arrested together when the football star was just 11 years old according the his official Broncos bio.
The Denver Post reported that Thomas, who met the president at the White House after the Broncos won the Super Bowl, slipped POTUS a note asking if he would consider amnesty for his grandmother too. Thomas’s grandmother is 60. She’ll be released from a Florida prison in December. A change.org petition organized by Demaryius’ mother has also helped bring attention to his grandmother’s case.
Wanna Thank the @POTUS for everything he’s done for my family, and a lot more families giving them second chances. Couldn’t be a better day!
