In 2012, the Mississippi newspaper The Clairon-Ledger published an article titled ‘Gone’ by investigative reporter Jerry Mitchell. The piece outlined the circumstances regarding the 1962 death of Mary Horton Vail, and the disappearances of her husband Felix Vail’s girlfriend Sharon Hensley (1973) and his second wife Annette Craver Vail (1984). When private investigator Gina Frenzel, aka Batgirl, read the story, she offered to help Mitchell track down Vail.

Frenzel found Vail. While wearing an audio recorder hidden in her bra, she befriended him and began to play the role of his girlfriend. After his arrest, Vail wrote letters to Frenzel. In one he blamed Mitchell — “an evil, shrimpy reporter” — for what had happened. ABC 20/20 will air its investigative report on Friday, July 29 at 10pm.
