Alysia Montaño (née Johnson) is an American middle distance runner known for wearing a flower in her hair. She’s also known for being a six-time USA Outdoor Track and Field champion in the 800 meters (2007, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015). What happened in 2014? Montaño came in dead last, running 2:32.13 while 8 months pregnant. Her best personal time is 1:57:34. (Montaño had a baby girl.)
At the 2012 Olympics, Montaño finished in fifth place. But Montaño may yet be awarded the bronze medal for that Olympics effort because in November 2015, the World Anti-Doping Agency recommended that the two Russian runners who finished in first and third be banned for their doping violations. That means Montano would have come in third. The International Olympic Committee has yet to issue disqualifications. Montano will talk about racing against the Russian runners, “robots” she says, who “are not really human,” on 60 Minutes Sports, June 7, 9pm on Showtime.
