Late Late Show host James Corden loves Broadway and Broadway loves Lin-Manuel Miranda. Let’s make this a little more clear: Broadway loves Lin-Manuel Miranda and his breakout smash Hamilton like it hasn’t loved a show in a long, long time. Sure the Great White Way loved and honored The Book of Mormon — it was something like no one had ever seen before. But Hamilton took it a step further — retelling a story no one really knew and delivering it with a musical verve and style that made good old Broadway feel alive again.
It’s nearly impossible to get tickets now unless you’re as rich as Alexander Hamilton himself ended up being. But you can still get the funky flavor of the smash as James Corden drives Lin-Manuel Miranda around Manhattan. Adele notwithstanding, this may be the most spot-on Carpool Karaoke yet. Carpool Karaoke almost didn’t happen, as Corden explained to Howard Stern recently. Alexander Hamilton almost didn’t happen either — that’s the thrill. The Tonys are on CBS Sunday June 12 at 8pm. But the carpool cut below may be the best Broadway-themed television you’re likely to encounter.
