In the Castle episode “Dead Again,” a city safety inspector named Alan Masters cheats death twice when he survives separate poisoning attempts. Castle (Nathan Fillion) visits him in the hospital and calls him a superhero. “No, I’m really not,” says Masters. “I’m just an ordinary guy.” Castle tries to convince Masters that he is. “That’s how most superheroes start out…as mild mannered weaklings.” Masters replies, “If I agree with you, will you leave me alone?” Castle won’t leave him alone and Detective Esposito (Jon Huertas) suggests “Safety Man” as Masters’ superhero name. It doesn’t stick.
Alan Masters is Jonathan Silverman. He’s known for his roles in the films Weekend at Bernie’s (Richard Parker), Caddyshack II (Harry), Brighton Beach Memoirs (Eugene Morris Jerome), Death Becomes Her (Jay Norman), and The Odd Couple II (Brucey Madison), among others. More recently, Silverman has had recurring roles on HBO’s Getting On (Dr. Happy Gladner) and CW’s Significant Mother (Harrison Marlowe). Fun fact: Silverman is married to actress Jennifer Finnigan. Castle airs Mondays at 10pm on ABC.
