Two seismic events have shaken the Multispandex in the last few weeks. Firstly, Marvel’s Deadpool is a solid hit. The foul-mouthed, funny comic book movie is the biggest-grossing R-rated film in history. Secondly, Marvel’s rival DC released Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice to less than superheroic reviews. While the movie is doing good business, the critical mauling of Zack Snyder’s grim and dour film coupled with the jokey and irreverent tone of Deadpool has DC and Warner Bros. rethinking — and reshooting — Suicide Squad.
According to Birth. Movies. Death, the costly reshoots have been ordered to lighten the film’s tone. because the fun-filled trailer set to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” contains pretty much all the movie’s jokes. (see below) “Hearing that WB is aware that they need to inject some fun into these movies – and that’s what I’m hearing is happening here, not that they’re inserting jokes left and right but that they’re beefing up fun character moments and interactions – can only mean good things for the future of the DC Movieverse,” writes Devin Faraci.
