Atlanta rapper Future separated himself early on, destined for big things like his name predicts. One of the hardest working performers in the business, Future maintains the cool that makes him seem like he’s hardly working. But the tale of the tape — or mixtape — tells a different story. Future is now dropping Purple Reign, produced by vets Metro Boomin and DJ Esco. There are 13 tracks on Reign. Enough to make that other super prolific music prodigy Prince look almost like a slacker: his 1984 Purple Rain, which gets an obvious namecheck from Future here, had just nine songs.
Future’s current/last release, Dirty Sprite 2 — or DS2 — just dropped in July, winning praise all over the place. DS2 made 2016 best albums lists at Pitchfork, FACT, Rolling Stone, Complex and Stereogum for just a start. DS2 also had 13 tracks. A lucky number for Future, obviously: Dirty Sprite 2 debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, just like Purple Reign will. Well, that’s not guaranteed, but Future’s reign seems to be. He seems to like the rule. Being this prolific, working this hard at his game, he’ll no doubt rise again and again. Hey, Future’s top competition on the charts is Adele, and she releases an album about every four years.
