Spurs fan favorite 7’3″ Serbian center Boban Marjanovic somehow gets more attention than most 7’3″ guys. Spurs fans go mad for him — chanting “MVP” during his free throws. It’s in jest, but they love the big man with the tireless game. The Marjanovic phenomenon is called “Boban Mania” and San Antonio has a big bad case of it.
Spurs forward David West says “Boban’s a helluva player.” West isn’t kidding — just look at Boban use his magnificent hands.* The 27-year-old Marjanovic is a double-double machine, who brings serious Euro credentials to a team that’s been the very best at utilizing international talent. The hard-working Boban looks like he’ll be able to write his own NBA ticket from here — and fans want him to remain a Spur. But he’s on a one-year deal and is proving a very attractive commodity wherever he goes and rebounds ferociously over opposing big men. He’s got a soft shooting touch, too. Tempted as he’ll be by other teams, Boban fits in perfectly with the Spurs team ethic, like San Antonio was his destiny. Indeed, Marjanovic came a long way to get to Texas: maybe that “MVP” the fans shout just stands for “Make Voyage Permanent.”
*Marjanovic will likely get extra minutes and create his own touches with those hands on Jan 30 against Cleveland — Tim Duncan will sit out.
