Donald Trump keeps roaring against Jeb Bush, even as he accepts compliments from and praises Vladimir Putin. Yet according to polls, Trump the candidate remains unscathed for treating the brother and son of two US presidents with less respect than he treats a brutal de facto dictator. In fact, Trump’s numbers keep rising.

Trump took his vitriol beyond the campaign fumbles of Bush to level a personal attack on the former Florida governor’s intelligence, tweeting that either Bush (or the decision to elect him president) is “Dumb as a rock!” (see below). This is in stark contrast to Trump’s praise for Russian president Putin, whom Trump has called a strong “leader,” despite allegations that Putin has journalists and others who disagree with him murdered. (Mitt Romney: “Important distinction: thug Putin kills journalists and opponents; our presidents kill terrorists and enemy combatants.”) Maybe what Trump means is that Jeb Bush is dumb because he can’t see in Putin what Trump and Jeb’s brother George W. Bush have been able to see. When President Bush met with Putin back in 2001, he was able “to get a sense of his soul.”
