New 911 Carrera models will have an optional front-axle lift system, according to Porsche. The lift will keep the famous road-hugging sports car from hugging the road when it shouldn’t. After all, speed bumps and Porsches were never meant to occupy the same planet, let alone the same parking lot. But even a 911 driver — master of the universe in other realms — must sometimes contend with bumps and ramps in lots and garages.
So Porsche delivers the lift solution for 911 drivers who aren’t so much racing around banked tracks as zipping out with 600-plus horsepower to pick up bagels or dry cleaning. The front-axle lift will raise the front end by approximately 40 mm — making it easier to avoid those withering looks Porsche drivers suffer when they scrape the bottoms of their six-figure rides on road surfaces a Hyundai glides over with glee. Still 40 mm is only about an inch and a half. Care still warranted. It’s still a Porsche you know.
