Petra Cetkovska outshone number 4 seed Caroline Wozniacki at the US Open on Thursday. Cetkovska saved four match points on her serve and then blew Wozniacki away in the tie-break to win 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1). Cetkovska has never made it past the fourth round of a major tournament and she’s still recovering from a hip injury (she had an operation in September). The Czech is currently ranked 149th in the world.
The 30-year-old Cetkovska turned pro in 2000. According to WTA Tennis, since turning pro, she’s earned $1,879,000 in prize money. That’s good money, but that’s not tennis star loot. Year-to-date Cetkovska’s won $127,156 — about 85% less than Wozniacki who has made $909,621 YTD. Cetkovska will face Italian Flavia Pennetta ($712,401) next at the US Open. Her earnings figure is fast on the rise.
