King of All Media Howard Stern is renowned for being open and transparent, not qualities other Kings of Media generally share. You know, Rupert Murdoch doesn’t go on FOX News, which he owns, and discuss his visits to the shrink. But Howard Stern talks about his psychological state all the time. Just last month Stern said on air that he gets panic attacks that floor him — during the frequent attacks his “heart beats so fast [he] can’t breathe.”

This week Stern said on the Stern Show that his panic attacks are back, but he’s been talking to his shrink and it’s helping. The other thing that helps Stern is drawing. His art, which he’s delved into more deeply, is essentially “art therapy,” Stern revealed. Drawing makes him “feel better.” But it’s the admission that he routinely seeks help from a mental health professional that has advocates for mental health applauding. Stern speaks without shame (though not without regret) about having to consult a professional. That first step is often the scariest — and Howard Stern openness about it opens the door wider for those who need to walk through.
