Stan Wawrinka was due to win and the hardworking Swiss star collected his due at Roland Garros today with a 6-4 6-3 7-6 (7-4) win over fellow Swiss Roger Federer. Wawrinka had lost three his last four matches against Federer, the No. 2 seed, but sharp observers noted that they’d split the last two played on clay. Wawrinka, the 2014 Australian Open champ, has been surging. He said after his victory, “Today was my best match on clay and it’s an incredible moment for me.”
Wawrinka, seeded No. 8, will play 14-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinal. Tsonga beat Japan’s Kei Nishikori.
