On Vikings, the city of Paris is in a panic when the Viking fleet shows up. At the behest of his daughter Princess Gisla, Emperor Charles of France announces that he will stay put. While everyone else flees the city terrified of the fast approaching invaders, the King of France comes face to face with King Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel). The real life Emperor Charles was steadfast against the Viking invaders. As the history books tell us, “he ordered fortified bridges to be put up at all rivers to block the Viking incursions. Two of these bridges at Paris saved the city during its siege of 885–886.”
Emperor Charles of France is portrayed by Canadian actor Lothaire Bluteau. He’s best known for his roles as Marcus Alvers on 24, and Charles de Marillac on The Tudors. Vikings airs Thursdays at 10pm on the History Channel.
