The NFL will pay up to $5 million each to retired players who suffer from severe neurological disorders, according to a federal judge’s decision. The decision brings an end to a long legal battle against the NFL by the more than 5,000 former NFL players who brought the lawsuit. However, despite the NFL’s wishes, the suit does not cover future damages the league could suffer in separate suits brought by individuals who were not part of the current plaintiff group. The NFL had hoped to head off those potential suits by bundling them in this decision.
The NFL will also have to pay $10 million to fund concussion education.
