St. John’s Red Storm plays the San Diego State Aztecs in a second-round NCAA Tournament game in Charlotte on March 20 (9:30 pm on CBS). St. John’s University made a video of its top players on their way to Charlotte to compete. Wearing their gray uniforms and maintaining a serious tone at the press conference there, they look more like West Point cadets than Johnnies.
At the press conference, coach Steve Lavin said: “This is probably the most gratifying year of my career.” That’s saying a lot. He’s been coaching since 1988 (Purdue, UCLA, St. John’s). He’s most impressed with the fact that all five of his stoic senior players will graduate this year. “Maybe I’m naive, but I think that (earning your degree) is important.”
