Fifty Shades of Grey, the pseudo-bondage movie that real bondage enthusiasts think is silly, made a ton of money, caused at least one man to get assaulted, and is getting released in an extended, unrated version (read: more neatly arranged whips), almost starred the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targeryan. While Daenerys certainly seems to know how to tease and torture–the audience, that is: it’s been four years and she still hasn’t brought her bloody dragons across the Narrow Sea to reclaim the Iron Throne--actress Emilia Clarke turned down the role of Anastasia Steele because of the movie’s nude scenes.
Clarke met twice with director Sam Taylor-Johnson, who, by the way, has announced she won’t be directing the sequel. But Clarke was concerned about being typecast as an actress who always gets naked on screen. Clarke, who has been nude in Game of Thrones plenty of times, and who was naked on the Broadway stage in a production of Breakfast at Tiffany’s, decided that being naked and tied up and struggling to fake sexual chemistry with Jamie Dornan wasn’t for her. “I’d done nudity before and was concerned with being labeled for doing it again,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. Fans of naked Emilia Clarke will have to wait until the new season of Game of Thrones to see if her days of doing full-frontal nudity are, er, behind her.
