Joanna Jedrzejczyk became the new UFC strawweight champion at UFC 185 in Dallas, dominating Carla Esparza. With her difficult-to-pronounce surname, Jedrzejczyk was figuring she might have to go by her initials–JJ–soon. Either that or do something that would make people learn how to say it. Last night she was practically taunting Esparza and fight fans everywhere with “Say my name. Say my name” as she landed each ferocious blow.
Esparza wanted to wrestle and Jedrzejczyk did not. And unfortunately for Esparza, there wasn’t too much wrestling. That’s the tale of the fight right there: it wasn’t the kind of fight Esparza wanted–or needed. The referee finally stopped the fight in the second round after Jedrzejczyk landed a vicious combination that floored Esparza. Jedrzejczyk is now a career 9-0 and the new champion. She’d like you to say her name.
