With a single sentence, the controversial and uber-talented point guard Rajon Rondo took the mystery out of why he was under-appreciated in Boston–and why GM Danny Ainge was eager to deal him for what looks like not a lot in return. Coming back to Boston as a newly minted Dallas Maverick, the mercurial Rondo told MassLive: “I haven’t played defense in a couple of years…”
It wasn’t an admission he backed down from either. Rondo said he was able to get away with it because teammate and defensive hawk Avery Bradley bailed him out. Now in the Western Conference, Rondo admits he’ll have to play some D or be embarrassed. Can he just turn it on after the two-year layoff? Do the defensive muscles atrophy? We’ll see. Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook and Damian Lillard must have loved hearing Rondo’s got to start over.
