American author Toni Morrison, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, will publish a new novel in April. The novel is called God Help the Child, which in essence could have been the title for nearly every previous Toni Morrison novel. Morrison’s books include Song of Solomon, The Bluest Eye, Sula, and Beloved, which won the Pulitzer Prize.
Morrison’s publisher Knopf describes God Help the Child as a “searing tale about the way childhood trauma shapes and misshapes the life of the adult. At the center: a woman who calls herself Bride, whose stunning blue-black skin is only one element of her beauty, her boldness and confidence, her success in life; but which caused her light-skinned mother to deny her even the simplest forms of love.” Morrison will be 84 in February.
