Russian professional boxer Sergey Kovalev had dinner this week with French actor Gérard Depardieu. Depardieu, now a Russian citizen after complaining about high taxes in France, did play a washed-up boxer in the 1976 film Barocco. And Glenn Collins of The New York Times once described Depardieu as “a gentle heart in a boxer’s body” but that was in 1990.
When not mingling with Russian athletes and ruthless leaders (Ramzan Kadyrov), Depardieu is busy promoting his new luxury watch collection called “Proud to Be Russian.” According to the Guardian, “The timepieces feature a Russian double-headed eagle on the face, with gold trim, and prices start at 15,000 Swiss francs (about £10,000).”
