Marvel Studios has announced Phase 3 of its plan to dominate the box-office for the next few years. Upcoming comic-book silliness at the multiplex includes a sequel to Guardians of the Galaxy, another Thor movie, another Captain America film, as well as films of Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Doctor Strange. Chadwick Boseman has been cast as Black Panther. At a Marvel liveblog to announce the slate of films, Robert Downey Jr. welcomed Boseman to the blog–and to the Marvel cinematic family–with the words “Welcome to the fray. Get used to that applause.”
Although there were rumors over the weekend that Benedict Cumberbatch will be Doctor Strange, apparently that is still unconfirmed, as Marvel did not announce the cast for the film today.“If it was confirmed, we would have announced it today,” said Marvel’s Kevin Feige. There was also talk of a Hulk movie. “What happens with a standalone Hulk film? We’ll see. We’d love to find the place to put it.” As for Captain Marvel, the studio has not yet commissioned a script or looked at actors. Expect a lot of rumors and general buzz, as Marvel is joining the girls’ club after all: this will be the first Marvel female superhero film. Scarlett Johannson must be wondering what she has to do to get a Black Widow standalone movie.
