Buffalo Bills kicker Dan Carpenter booted an incredible 58-yard field goal with four seconds remaining to lead the Bills to a difficult road 17-14 win in Detroit. Lions fans had done everything they could to help their team, including allegedly aiming laser pointers into the eyes of Bills quarterback Kyle Orton and placekick holder Colton Schmidt. It may be that Carpenter was fortunate to be all of 58-yards out for his game-winning kick–too far for the lasers to reach him. Bills coach Doug Marrone talked about the laser pointer problem in the post-game press conference. The NFL and Lions management have been informed of the complaint.
Ironically, it was placekicking that failed the Lions as Detroit kicker Alex Henery missed all three of his field goal attempts including a late potential game winner from 50 yards. Could it have been that the Detroit fans were simply untrained with the laser pointers and aimed them at Henery too? Or maybe the evidence points to a case where laser pointers actually help a kicker. Wait till Bill Belichick hears this.
